What is included in the directory?

The directory includes detailed information on:

Each profile provides:
  • country-specific up-to-date information on:
    • the academic credential being assessed;
    • the education system;
    • trends and reforms;
    • competent authorities;
    • national information centres; and
    • education-related organizations.
  • information on:
    • provincial and territorial education systems in Canada;
    • comparability assessment outcomes for academic credentials issued within the 13 education systems in Canada.
  • a members-only collaborative space where academic credential assessors can discuss issues related to best practices in assessment and recognition.

The comparability assessment outcomes cited are those of working-group members who were convened by CICIC to develop comparability assessment outcomes by sharing their own views and practices. Comparability assessment outcomes under each organization reflect the opinion of working-group members and do not represent a commitment by their respective organizations.


What is not included in the directory?

The directory does not provide a definite outcome that academic credential assessors would be required to adopt. Multiple outcomes may also be suggested for consideration.

These outcomes reflect the practices of working-group members, and/or their respective departments or organizations. This information is shared as a set of references, for the benefits of the pan-Canadian community of academic credential assessors, to:
  • learn about other organizations' practices and policies; and
  • guide their decision process to reach a comparability assessment outcome within their respective context.

Through the Building Bridges project, CICIC has sought to foster greater consistency and collaboration among the various organizations performing academic credential assessments in all jurisdictions in Canada, including but not limited to:
  • academic credential assessment services;
  • regulatory bodies; and
  • educational institutions.
In accordance with the principles put forward in the Forum of Labour Market Ministers' Pan-Canadian Framework for the Assessment and Recognition of Foreign Qualifications, and thanks to funding from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), CICIC convened a working group in 2013 comprising representatives from:
  • academic credential assessment services;
  • regulatory bodies; and
  • educational institutions.

Get involved in this initiative

CICIC seeks to foster a climate of information sharing and open dialogue among the pan-Canadian community of academic credential assessors. The information found in this directory was developed on the basis of:
  • exchanges and discussions by experts in the field of assessment and recognition;
  • existing policies and methodologies developed and used within:
    • academic credential assessment services;
    • educational institutions; and
    • regulatory bodies.
Members are invited to:
  • add additional information, such as:
    • document samples;
    • comments on existing published information;
    • suggestions for other comparability assessment outcomes within their particular context.
  • propose a new academic credential issued outside Canada.
This collaborative approach is key to:
  • building an understanding of legitimate and substantial differences in assessment outcomes;
  • ensuring the portability of assessment outcomes:
    • between the provinces and territories of Canada;
    • within the organizations responsible for recognition that operate in various sectors.

CICIC welcomes contributions from the pan-Canadian community to help continuously improve the information published in this directory.
