Information on requirements to practise
The occupations in this category are regulated in some areas of the work and in some provinces. Horticulturists, arborists, and landscape gardeners may be required to complete an apprenticeship program to obtain certification. Those who apply chemical fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides may be required to have a provincial licence to do so. Some occupations in agriculture are regulated in Quebec, where membership in the Ordre des agronomes du Québec (OAQ) is mandatory, and it is illegal to practise without being registered as a full member. Also in Quebec, those who want to use the designation Professional Technologist (PT) or Technologiste professionel (TP) must be members of the professional regulatory body.
In the other provinces, membership or eligibility for membership in the provincial institute of agrology is usually required. These institutes of agrology are responsible for setting the standards for entry into the occupations and for issuing licences to those who meet established standards of qualifications and practice. When you know where you will settle and work in Canada, you should contact the appropriate provincial institute of agrology (see list below) for information on licensing procedures and requirements to practise.

Information on assessment of qualifications
Although the provincial institutes of agrology can provide information on the occupations in their jurisdictions, they are not set up to assess foreign credentials before you arrive in Canada. However, the Agricultural Institute of Canada has an arrangement with the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) to provide assessments of educational qualifications obtained outside of Canada. Please note that IQAS charges a fee for their service, and that the assessment they provide is advisory only and does not guarantee recognition of your qualifications for employment or licensure purposes in Canada
